Mustang is a recently opened trekking area, but for limited groups each year. It was the former Buddhist kingdom of Lo that extended to the upper reaches of the Kali Gandaki River which has carved the deepest gorge in the world between Dhaulagiri and the Annapurnas. Mustang has a long and rich history that makes it one of the most interesting places in Nepal . There are archives in Lo that record events that took place as far back as the early 8th century AD.
The trek follows the west side of Jomsom Valley with magnificent views of Dhaulagiri, Nilgiri and the Annapurna massif from the pass at 4,000 metres and takes one to the fabled medieval, walled city of Lo Manthang rich with cultural and religious heritage. Not having been inundated with tourists, the region has retained its unique and pristine nature. The countryside of Lo Manthang is similar to that of the Tibetan plateau with its endless expanses of yellow and gray rolling hills. A trek into this fabled, once forbidden kingdom of vast, arid valleys, eroded canyons and yak caravan trails watched over benevolently by the majestic Nilgiri, Tukche, Annapurna and Dhaulagiri rewards one with a cultural insight into the primitive settlement of early Buddhists whose lifestyle has remained unchanged for centuries. It is indeed a very special adventure.
